A pause can help a listener separate two thoughts. Try one contrast, listen back, and judge whether the relationship is easier to follow. Longer is not automatically better.
Two thoughts. One useful pause.
A short listening exercise: record a contrast, make the boundary audible, then try it with new words.

- 01Take A
- 02Listen
- 03One focus
- 04Take B
- 05New words
We could launch on Friday. / But the payment flow still needs testing.
Try it in four steps
- Record Take A. Say both thoughts naturally using a recorder you already have. Keep the same microphone and distance for both takes.
- Listen once. Can you hear where the first thought ends and the contrast begins?
- Record Take B. Make that boundary intentional. A small pause may help; do not aim for a prescribed duration.
- Compare, then transfer. Listen to both. Choose the one that makes the contrast easier to follow without extra effort. Try the same intention on new words.
A new sentence
The proposal is ready. / But we still need the client's approval.
What to notice
| Listen for | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Thought boundary | Can I hear the contrast without seeing the text? |
| Naturalness | Does this still sound like something I would say? |
| Effort | Can I repeat it without forcing the pause? |
| Transfer | Does the intention survive different words? |
The practice path
Take A → listen → one change → Take B → compare → new words.
This is a sequence of actions, not a measurement of your voice.
Sources and limits
This is an authored, experimental exercise based on the current Ptichi practice method. The example sentences are invented for rehearsal; they are not recordings or study results.
An easier second take does not prove learning or a benefit for another listener. There is no universal ideal pause length. Stop if the exercise becomes uncomfortable; this page does not diagnose speech or prescribe treatment.
